How to Choose a Security Company

Choosing a security company is a major decision that can significantly impact the safety of your family, estate, or business.

The most effective security defense is to assess your security environment.

Owens & Associates typically recommends a layered security approach, combining physical security with advanced technical security as needed.

After your security vulnerabilities are identified, Owens & Associates helps you prioritize our resources to mitigate your security concerns properly.

Here are several key factors to consider when selecting a security company:

1. Understand Your Specific Security Needs

Start with a security self-evaluation to better understand your personal security requirements.

Knowing your specific security concerns will help you decide which security company can best fulfill your requirements.

2. Seek Advice from Family and Friends

Sometimes, personal referrals are the best way to find a trustworthy company.

3. Check for Certified Security Companies and Employees

When speaking with potential security companies, ask if their security officers are trained and confirm their experience level.  California security companies must have their security officers certified by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.

Owens & Associates utilizes highly trained former or retired law enforcement personnel, former and retired federal agents, and former military.

4. Proof of Licenses

California requires that security professionals and the company they work for be licensed.

Be sure to ask potential security companies for documentation of their PPO (Private Patrol Operator license) or their PI (Private Investigators license) as required by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Ask for proof to ensure their licenses are up to date.

California requires all security companies to carry General Liability Insurance (GLI—minimum $1M) and Workers’ Compensation insurance. Ask potential companies for their certificate of insurance. You can follow up with the insurance carrier to verify that the policy is current.

5. Organize a Meeting with Potential Companies

Once you have narrowed your search to two or three trusted security companies, schedule an in-person meeting with a representative from each company.

Your consultation should include an estate, business, or home security assessment and recommendations to mitigate security concerns.

6. Review the Contract

After selecting a security company, thoroughly read your contract.

Discuss the contract terms and address your questions with a company representative.

Remember, the safety of your loved ones, your estate, and your property should always come first. By following these recommendations, you will make an informed decision about effectively protecting your home and loved ones.
